New Delhi: Amidst tight security, India witnessed its 65th Republic Day parade on the historic Rajpath today. 

With the three service chiefs in attendance, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh paid homage and laid a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial at India Gate.

The prime minister, defence minister AK Anthony and others then observed a two-minute silence after the buglers sounded the Last Post.

Manmohan Singh signed the visitor's book before heading back to the saluting base on Rajpath for the Republic Day parade where his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe is the chief guest.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Sunday keenly witnessed the Republic Day parade.

To avoid any possible strike, snipers with sophisticated arms and binoculars were on rooftops while hundreds of police personnel kept watch on the 8-km-long parade route from Rajpath to Red Fort.
