Kolkata: A group of lawyers and human rights activists today burnt an effigy of former Supreme Court judge Ashok Kumar Ganguly at a protest rally here to demand his resignation as the West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) chief.

The protest march and candle rally from the Press Club was participated by lawyers from the All India Legal Aid Forum and the All India Bar Association besides a number of social organisations and activists.

Shouting slogans against Ganguly who was indicted over allegations of sexually harassing a law intern, they burnt his effigy and demanded his immediate resignation from the post of chairman of the WBHRC.

Joydeep Mukherjee, secretary of the All India Legal Aid Forum and the All India Bar Association, said the allegations against Ganguly were of a very serious nature and he must step down and let the law take its course to uphold the reputation of the judiciary.

“There is the question of morality here. The allegations are sufficient cause for his removal,” he said, adding that letters have been written to the Chief Justice of India as well as the President to remove Ganguly from the post.  Ganguly has denied the allegations against him.
