Watch in pics: India's first monorail in Mumbai

New Delhi: India is developing at a fast pace. Day by day, new technological advancements, infrastructure, public transport etc are improving. With this growth, the country's first monorail project became successful after the launch in Mumbai on February 2, 2014. The much awaited monorail was welcomed by 20,000 riders in Mumbai. The monorail project has been executed by a consortium of engineering major Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T) and Malaysian firm Scomi Engineering and owned and operated by MMRDA. 2. It's an 8.8 km long line between Wadala and Chembur in the central eastern suburbs of Mumbai city. 3. The 3,000 crore projects are being implemented in two phases. 4. The first phase comprises the 8.9 km long Wadala-Chembur section, which was thrown open on Sunday. The second phase of the services will be extended to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk in South Mumbai. 5. It is the Mumbai's first public mode of transport after independence. 6. It would revolutionize the Mumbaikars traveling experience, with its smart card usage; air conditioned coaches, lifts and escalators. 7. The fare for the train is Rs 5-11 for the first phase of operations. MMRDA will operate six trains in the first phase, and another 10 will be added in the second. 8. Initially, the service will start from 7 am to 3 pm at a frequency of 15 minutes and afterwards the services will be extended depending upon the convenience of the passengers. 9. Usually, it takes more than half an hour to commute from Wadala to Chembur but through monorail, the travel time would be about 20 minutes.The monorail will be extended to a 20-km corridor, with work on the remaining stretch—Wadala to Jacob Circle—expected to be completed by March 2015.
