Meet Chaman Lal who sold most of the AAP caps in Delhi

New Delhi: Chaman Lal, a 39-year-old small-time businessman of cheap caps in Delhi's Sadar Bazaar, today is a happy man as Arvind Kejriwal will take oath as Delhi CM.Chaman Lal is the man who saw 6-7 lakh AAP caps being distributed in Delhi since the party was formed in October this year. The cap worn by Kejriwal and thousands of Aam Aadmi Party members and supporters, symbolizes support and critics of AAP. Chaman Lal expects orders to increase after Kejriwal takes over as CM and AAP goes national. AAP caps are a small-margin venture. They sell for Rs 3 each, and Lal's margin, he says, is 25 paise. AAP caps were a takeoff from caps worn during Anna Hazare's Lokpal fast in Delhi. Anna caps were made of better fabric whereas AAP caps are made from China net, an inferior fabric. Orders picked massively as election campaign grew hotter, Lal says. Bulk orders of 2,000-3,000 AAP caps were common. AAP caps are white Gandhi topi style headgears with slogans printed on them. AAP caps are stitched by Delhi's poor in old city mohallas who earn daily wages for their labour. It is then distributed by the likes of Lal. Daily wagers get fabrics with AAP slogans printed on them. Most of the stitching is done on rusting sewing machines in slum workshops. The cap favoured by Delhi's chief minister is not yet the cap mostly bought by Delhi's citizens.
