Agra: Railways has hired monkey catchers at a cumulative package of Rs 9 lakh per year to get rid of monkeys from four major railway stations of Agra division.
Langur owners were being hired to provide their services at the stations, PRO for Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Bhupinder Dhillon said.
Monkeys here often get electrocuted and create problems with transmission lines besides they harass passengers at the railway stations.
As of now, Mathura Junction, Agra Fort, Raja Ki Mandi and Agra Cantonment railway stations will get the langur security cover, the PRO said today.
Complaining about the increase in the number of monkey attacks, citizens' groups here has demanded that the primates be translocated.
Agra Divisional Commissioner Pradeep Bhatnagar said a project for building a monkey sanctuary along the banks of Yamuna River at Farah in Mathura district has been approved.
A Rs 58-lakh package has been approved for catching monkeys in Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan and relocating them to the sanctuary, Bhatnagar said adding that the exercise would start in next two months.
