Lakhimpur Kheri: Congress delegation meet President; accused Ashish Mishra's bail plea rejected

The Congress has been demanding the immediate dismissal of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra whose son Ashish has been named in the FIR and is accused of mowing down farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3.

A delegation of Congress leaders, including former party president Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday, met President Ram Nath Kovind demanding the immediate dismissal of Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra over the Lakhimpur Kheri violence. The delegation of senior Congress leaders also presented a memorandum of facts about the Lakhimpur Kheri incident to the President. The seven-member delegation comprised of Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, senior party leaders AK Antony and Ghulam Nabi Azad, Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and KC Venugopal. The Congress has been demanding the immediate dismissal of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra whose son Ashish has been named in the FIR and is accused of mowing down farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3, and strict action against the accused in the killing of farmers. Ashish was arrested on Saturday by the Uttar Pradesh Police in connection with the violence, in which eight people, including four farmers, were killed. Ashish's bail plea was rejected on Wednesday.

    Lakhimpur LIVE: Ankit Das surrenders before court

    Ankit Das, one of the accused in the Lakhimpur incident in which four farmers were mowed down by an SUV on October 3, has surrendered in court on Wednesday.

    The police had been conducting raids to arrest Ankit Das who is the nephew of former MP, late Akhilesh Das.

    A notice had been pasted at his residence residential address in Lucknow.

It was believed that in Punjab the violent incidents will adversely affect the BJP in Punjab, where the party is already facing strong opposition from farmers since last one year.

    BJP national general secretary and Punjab in-charge, Dushyant Gautam said, "There are only two per cent farmers misled by leftists and other political parties are trying to disturb the peaceful environment in the state. Lakhimpur Kheri incident has no impact either in Punjab or Uttarakhand."

    Lakhimpur LIVE: Ankit Das appears before SIT

    Ankit Das, said to be a close friend of Tikonia violence accused Ashish Mishra, turned up before the special investigation team (SIT) at the crime branch office in Lakhimpur on Wednesday, police said. The investigators had summoned Das for questioning in connection with the October 3 violence which had left eight people, including four farmers, dead.

    At around 11 am, Das along with a team of lawyers arrived at the reserved police lines in Lakhimpur and reached the crime branch office located there, police said.
