Kolkata, May 3: Angry protestors in Kolkata yesterday burnt effigies of Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, while torch rallies were held as a mark of respect to Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh who died after a brutal assault in a Pakistan jail.

In central Kolkata, Congress workers held a rally outside the Tea Board office, demanding the perpetrators of the barbaric attack on Sarabjit be brought to justice.

"Why did Sarabjit Singh die? Pakistan government, shame shame," cried a poster.

With their mouths covered with a black cloth, the activists carried big banners with pictures of Sarabjit and later burnt Zardari's effigy.

On Ananda Palit Road in central Kolkata, rights activists pelted Zardari's effigy with slippers before setting it ablaze.

A group of women protested nearby, as they held aloft garlanded pictures of Sarabjit.

Members of the Sikh community brought out a torch rally in South Kolkata's Hazra Crossing after walking a few km from Garcha Road.
