Kolkata rape-murder case HIGHLIGHTS: Routine OPD, OT services to be suspended at AIIMS Delhi on Saturday

Andhra Pradesh: Doctors in Vijayawada held a candle march to show solidarity with the victim of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder incident. 

The Faculty Association of AIIMS (FAIMS), Delhi, has announced that routine OPD and operation theatre services will be suspended on Saturday to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at a state-run hospital Kolkata and subsequent vandalism at the facility.

Healthcare services across Odisha were severely disrupted on Friday as junior and senior resident doctors from various medical colleges joined a nationwide strike demanding justice for the Kolkata doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at a state-run hospital last week.

Demanding justice for the postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped-murdered at a state-run R G Kar Hospital, around 500 students, teachers, and non-teaching staff of Presidency University held a 3km solidarity rally on Friday. The march took place from the university's main campus on College Street to Shyambazar.

Slogans like "We want justice" echoed through the air as thousands of doctors from major hospitals staged a sit-in protest outside the Nirman Bhawan on Friday, demanding safety for medics and justice for the trainee doctor who was raped and brutally murdered in Kolkata. The Maulana Azad Road was blocked as a large number of doctors protested there, with some wearing black bands on their sleeves.

IMA has declared 24-hour withdrawal of services by all the modern medicine doctors of the country irrespective of the sector and place of work. Emergencies and casualties will function. No OPDs. No elective surgeries. The withdrawal commences at 6 am on Saturday 17th August 2024 and ends at 6 am on Sunday 18th August 2024.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Friday demanded that the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee resign as he accused her of saving the perpetrators of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R J Kar Medical College on August 9.

"Action will be taken against the accused. We have arrested around 25 people and photographs of 9 people have been matched," he said.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee took out a rally against the incident of rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in Kolkata.

"We are liable for legal action if anyone in our team has done anything wrong... Why is rumour-mongering going on even now... It is wrong that we have informed the victim's family that she committed suicide," he said.

A team of CBI carrying a high-accuracy 3D laser scanner to record a digital blueprint of the site of the incident arrives at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. 

CBI sends notice to RG Kar Medical College Hospital former Principal Sandip Ghosh for questioning in connection with trainee doctor rape-murder probe.

A clash broke out between BJP leaders and police outside CGO Complex during BJP's protest over the RG Kar's Medical College and Hospital incident. The police have detained the protestors.

BJP leader Roopa Ganguly who was protesting against the rape and murder of a woman doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital said, "Mamata Banerjee, who is also the health minister, should resign."

Calcutta High Court on Friday took up the matter of vandalism at the campus of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.  Said, this is an absolute failure of state machinery.

The Calcutta High Court on Friday said the CBI has the power to visit hospital premises and conduct the investigation as it deems fit. "We direct appropriate police authorities as well as person incharge file reply related to vandalism and all matters connected to it. Let this be served to petitioners counsels. the investigative team by CBI shall also file interim report as progress with regard to matter."

Sandip Ghosh, ex Principal RG Kar Medical College and Hospital moves Calcutta High Court seeking Police protection.

The Outpatient Department (OPD) at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital in Delhi, which was operating normally in the morning, suddenly descended into chaos. All doctors in the OPD went on strike unexpectedly, leading to a disruption in services.

Frustrated by the sudden halt in medical services, patients began protesting in the hospital lobby, demanding immediate resumption of care. The situation quickly became tense as the protests intensified.

The CBI who is leading the Kolkata rape and murder incident today takes accused Sanjoy Roy for medical examination.

CBI sources on Friday said, today four doctors of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have been summoned by CBI Special Crime Branch in CGO complex, Salt Lake, Kolkata. CBI will interrogate these PGT (PG trainees) regarding what happened the night of the incident.

The father of the deceased doctor in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-death case said, "It is not lawfully appropriate to give details on our conversation with the CBI. I can't give you details on the questioning that has been done in connection with this case. They have recorded our statement and taken it in writing...I express gratitude to everyone, regarding the protest that has been happening across the country and world. I consider everyone who is standing with us, as my sons and daughters...CBI has assured us that the accused will be arrested at the earliest and awarded strict punishment based on whatever we have told them...I have turned down the compensation. It will hurt my daughter if I accept money as compensation for her death. I want justice." 

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to question Sandeep Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, in connection with the doctor’s rape and murder case. 

During the time of the incident, Ghosh was the Principal of the college. His name also surfaced in the investigation conducted by the Kolkata Police. The CBI has already recorded statements from 15 individuals, including the victim's family, and will interrogate Ghosh based on these testimonies.

Sandeep Ghosh has previously faced multiple allegations of corruption, which may further complicate his situation as the CBI deepens its probe into the case.

Kolkata Police on Friday informed 19 arrests have been made so far in connection to the RG Kar hospital vandalism. "Five of them were identified by social media feedback. If you recognise any of the suspects from our earlier posts, kindly inform us. Thank you for your support & trust," they added

West Bengal LoP Suvendu Adhikari wrote a letter to the Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and the Director of CBI regarding the vandalism that took place at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, and seeking the deployment of CAPF to prevent further destruction of evidence at the hospital.

Today, nearly all doctors' organisations in Mumbai, including CENTRAL MARD, BMC MARD, IMA, JDN, and ASMI, will hold a protest at Azad Maidan at 1 PM. The demonstration is in response to concerns over the safety of healthcare workers in the state.

Later in the evening, a candle march will be held at Rajawadi Hospital at 6 PM, organized by BMC MARD. This peaceful demonstration is part of the ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the safety issues faced by medical professionals.

As protests continue to escalate across India over the gruesome rape & murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) declared nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors of modern medicine from 6:00 am on Saturday (August 17) to 6:00 am Sunday (August 18) for 24 hours.
