Know Preet Bharara who humiliated Devyani Khobragade in New York

New Delhi: Indian-born Preet Bharara is an Indian American attorney and the current U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.He is the man behind Devyani Khobragade's controversial arrest. This is not the first time that Preet Bharara is under the scanner.In fact, he is said to have championed making some white-collar arrests in the past too.Bharara ‘s office has charged Khobragade for giving false information and documents to support her domestic help's visa application.Earlier in 2012 Bharara brought down Rajat Gupta too. Rajat Gupta's arrest hit the headlines in 2012. Rajat Gupta was a well-known entrepreneur and a Wall-Street icon with his origins from Kolkata who was charged with financial fraud, along with Raj Rajaratnam and Anil Kumar and 60 others.As the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Bharara is considered to be one of the most powerful prosecutors in America and was handpicked by US President Barack Obama for this position in May 2009. His term expires next year and it is widely speculated he could run for higher political office.Bharara was born in 1968 in Firozpur, Punjab, India, to a Sikh father and Hindu mother.He spent his childhood in Eatontown in suburban Monmouth County, New Jersey.He did his schooling from he studied Ranney School, New Jersey.He completed his law education from Harvard College in 1990 and Columbia Law School in 1993. His famous verdicts were against the Gambinos and the Colombo Crime Families when he was the state attorney in Manhattan for five years.Bharara was also featured on a cover of Time Magazine entitled “This Man is Busting Wall Street” for his office's prosecutions of insider trading and other financial fraud on Wall Street.Following the controversy over the arrest of Devyani Khobragade, Bharara earlier issued a statement defending his action,Bharara said Ms. Khobragade was charged based on conduct, as is alleged in the Complaint, that shows she clearly tried to evade U.S. law designed to protect from exploitation the domestic employees of diplomats and consular officers. Not only did she try to evade the law, but as further alleged, she caused the victim and her spouse to attest to false documents and be a part of her scheme to lie to U.S. government officials. So it is alleged not merely that she sought to evade the law, but that she affirmatively created false documents and went ahead with lying to the U.S. government about what she was doing. One wonders whether any government would not take action regarding false documents being submitted to it in order to bring immigrants into the country. One wonders even more pointedly whether any government would not take action regarding that alleged conduct where the purpose of the scheme was to unfairly treat a domestic worker in ways that violate the law. And one wonders why there is so much outrage about the alleged treatment of the Indian national accused of perpetrating these acts, but precious little outrage about the alleged treatment of the Indian victim and her spouse?
