New Delhi: The name Arihant derives from two words – Ari meaning enemy and Hanth meaning destroy.It is India's first indigenously built nuclear submarine.It cost cost $2.9bn to India. It was jointly developed by the



Arihant was launched for sea trials on 26 July 2009.



In 2010, the submarine was claimed to have begun its sea trials with the submarine to be formally inducted into the Indian Navy by 2011.

On 7 August 2012 Admiral Verma told reporters that sea trials of Arihant are commencing in coming months.

As per reports On 27 January 2013, Sagarika, the primary armament of Arihant, completed its final developmental test and will now be integrated with the submarine.

On 10 August 2013 the nuclear reactor of the submarine went critical ,this was done after several months of system checks using shore based high pressure steam.

As per reports the completion of the INS Arihant will make India one of six countries in the world with the ability to design, build, and operate its own nuclear submarines.
