Know more about India's Most Wanted Abdul Karim Tunda

New Delhi: Born in the early 40s, one of India's most wanted terrorists, Syed Abdul Karim alias Abdul Karim Tunda, accused of masterminding over 40 bombings in the country, has been arrested by Delhi Police. 70-year-old Tunda was an explosives expert for the LeT, an expert in making improvised explosive devices widely used by the militant outfit while carrying out a spate of bomb explosions in the late 1990s in Uttar Pradesh. A resident of Pikhuwa in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad district, Tunda was one of the 20 terrorists whose extradition India had demanded from Pakistan after the 2001 attack on Parliament House. In 1985 he joined an Islamic organization, ‘Tanzim Islah-ul-Muslimeen' – ‘Islamic armed organization'. One of their associates - Jalees Ansari, set off a series of 43 explosions in Mumbai and Hyderabad and seven separate bomb blasts on trains in 1993. As the result of the 1993 attack Abdul-Karim Tunda and the ‘Tanzim Islah-ul-Muslimeen' came under police scanner. In 1994 Tunda escaped to Dhaka after Jalees Ansari' arrest. He came under direct command of Zaki-ur-Rehman. Abdul-Karim Tunda became an Indian fugitive since then. Abdul-Karim earned his name ‘Tunda” after losing his left arm in a bomb-making accident in the mid 90s'. By 1998 Tunda's network had made a name for itself and had a number of terrorists on its roll. Members of his network were arrested, interrogated and revealed that the group was financed indirectly by ISI through Lashkar-e-Toiba and was manufacturing R.D.X explosives – the same that was used in the Mumbai Trains Bombing. In 1999 Tunda became a key figure in directing the activity of SIMI – Students Islamic Movement of India, which was just another branch in the multiple organization conglomerate of Islamic organizations linked to Pakistani ISI. In 2003 there were rumors that Abdul-Karim Tunda was killed in gang-warfare near Dhaka. However these reports were proven false after Abdul Razzak Masood, an alleged LeT operative who had been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police revealed that he had met Tunda recently. In 2006, it was thought that he had been apprehended in Nairobi, but that too turned out to be a false alarm.
