New Delhi: Neeraj Kumar has been serving as Delhi Police Commissioner since June 2012. He is now set to retire on 31st of July 2013. Bhim Sain Bassi, will be the new Delhi police commissioner from Ist of August till February 2016.Neeraj Kumar is a 1976-batch IPS officer of the AGMU cadre. He joined Civil Services in 1976 after getting an MSc degree from St Stephen's College in 1975.He has been identified for bringing professionalism to the force and cracking of a number of high-profile cases.He has set of achievements and controversies too during his tenure as an IPS officer.Neeraj Kumar has the distinction of serving in almost all the branches of police — Crime Branch, Special Cell, districts, Traffic, CBI and Prisons.It was Neeraj Kumar who started pre-paid taxis at Delhi airport in the early 1990s, when he was posted there as DCP (Traffic).In 1993, after serving as DCP of Crime Branch and South district, he was promoted and sent to CBI on deputation as DGP. It was during his nine-year tenure with the investigation agency that the Special Task Force was formed.Under his leadership, the STF investigated the 1993 Mumbai train blasts and arrested seven members of Tiger Memon's family. The cricket match-fixing scandal and UTI scam were busted during his tenure.Under Neeraj Kumar's leadership the latest the IPL spot fixing scandal was busted. Just a week back he has informed media that he will make sure that he will file the chargesheet against underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, the mastermind behind IPL-spot-fixing before his retirement.Before serving as Delhi Police commissioner, he was DG of Tihar prison.Neeraj Kumar is said to have his own set of backers, He was in controversies because of his good rapport with Minister of StateRajiv Shukla and Nagaland governor Nikhil Kumar. Besides, these he is also believed to share good ties with some top BJP leaders too.
