New Delhi: Sabarimala Sree Ayyappa Temple is is a Hindu pilgrimage centre and one of the most ancient and prominent Sastha temples in the country.
It is situated in in the Western Ghat mountain ranges of Pathanamthitta district, Perunad grama panchayat in Kerala.
Every year 70 million devotees visit Sabarimala and it is the largest annual pilgrimage in the world.
This temple is one of the few Hindu temples in India that is open to all faiths.
It is believed that Sabarimala is that place where the Hindu God Ayyappan meditated after killing the powerful demoness, Mahishi.
Ayyappan's temple is situated here amidst 18 hills.
The temple is surrounded by mountains and dense forests and situated on a hilltop at an altitude of 468 m (1535 ft).
