Srinagar, Jan 25: The cold wave tightened its grip further in Kashmir as the minimum temperatures in the Valley continue to remain several degrees below the freezing point, with the MET Department predicting no respite

Srinagar, Jan 25: The cold wave tightened its grip further in Kashmir as the minimum temperatures in the Valley continue to remain several degrees below the freezing point, with the MET Department predicting no respite from dry weather and the bone-chilling cold conditions till the end of this month.



The residents across the valley continue to shiver with the night temperatures remaining below the freezing point and the days getting colder.

The summer capital Srinagar recorded a low temperature of minus 3.2 degree Celsius, colder from the previous night's minus 1.8 degree Celsius, a spokesman of the MET Department said.

He said the minimum night temperature in the highway town of Qazigund in south Kashmir was minus 7.0 degree Celsius as against the yesterday's minus 6.4 degree Celsius.

The night temperature in Kokernag settled at a low of minus 7.5 degree Celsius, slightly up from minus 8.7 degree Celsius yesterday, he said.

The spokesman said that in north Kashmir's Kupwara town, where the previous night's minimum was minus 0.9 degree Celsius, the minimum temperature settled at a low of minus 2.2 degree Celsius during the night.

The minimum night temperature in Pahalgam hill resort in south, which serves as a base camp during annual Amarnath yatra, was down by about two notches to minus 13.0 degree Celsius from the previous night's minus 11.6 degree Celsius, he said.

He said in Gulmarg in north Kashmir, the minimum night temperature settled at minus 11.0 degree Celsius as compared to the previous night's minus 10.6 degree Celsius.

Leh town in the cold desert of Ladakh continues to be the coldest recorded place in the state with the night temperature recording a low of minus 20.0 degree Celsius. The previous night's low was minus 20.4 degree Celsius, the spokesman said.

He said that in Kargil, also in the frontier region of Ladakh, the minimum night temperature was minus 19.0 degrees Celsius as against the previous night's low of minus 18.8 degree Celsius.

The MET Office has said the weather will remain dry till the end of this month which may result in the further drop in the night as well as day temperatures.
