New Delhi: The funeral of late former President A P J Abdul Kalam will be held in Rameswaram, his birth place in Tamil Nadu, on July 30 with full military honours.
Home Ministry sources said Kalam would be given a state funeral and the last rites would be held at 11 AM on Thursday.
The funeral will be held in Rameswaram in accordance with the wishes of the family of Kalam, whose elder brother Muthu Mohammed Meeran Marakkair (99) is said to have insisted that the last rites be held there.Earlier, the indications were that the funeral would be held in Rameswaram tomorrow.
The body of former President A P J Abdul Kalam is expected to reach here by tomorrow noon and the funeral will be held in Rameswaram, District Collector K Nandhakumar said. Nandhakumar said chief ministers of six states are expected to participate in Kalam's funeral tomorrow.
The collector and Superintendent of Police Mayilvahanan also met the family members of Abdul Kalam and offered their condolences.
Meanwhile, S Patchaimal, an advocate from Tuticorin, tonsured his head while paying homage to the former president.
He said he had earlier tonsured his head when former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Kamaraj had died. The advocate said that like Kamaraj, he held Kalam in high esteem.
