Burdwan (West Bengal), Jul 17: Two photo journalists were assaulted and their cameras broken allegedly by Kolkata police official at Bhatar near here while covering a tussle between them and Burdwan police yesterday.
Burdwan Superintendent of Police S N H Mirza said trouble began when the constables of Kolkata police could not find enough number of vehicles to transport them from Bhatar, where they were put on panchayat poll duty, to Swarupnagar in North 24 Parganas.
They blocked the Burdwan-Katwa road and heckled the officer-in-charge of Bhatar police station Sanjay Kundu when he tried to pacify them, he said.
As the two camera persons - one from the audio-visual medium and another from print tried to take their photos the Kolkata Police constables assaulted them and smashed their cameras, he said.
ADG, Law and Order, was informed of the incident and the situation was controlled after buses were arranged for their transportation, Mirza added.
The lensmen later received first aid at a local dispensary.
