The day he raped and murdered nine-year-old Nusrat Shaikh in the slums of Kurla in a room accessible only through a small opening in the roof, Mohammed Javed Shaikh, 22, had bought her a big bar of chocolate. For almost a week before that, he would chat Nusrat up every day on his way home from work and offer her sugar candy. She had begun to trust him, reports Mumbai Mirror.
That day when he asked her if she would join for a stroll, she readily took his hand and began to walk. This was the afternoon of June 7. On June 19, Nusrat's decomposed body was found in a locked room with a wire around her left ankle.
According to Nehrunagar cops, Javed confessed to the crime on Saturday in his parents' presence. “He broke down as he told his ammi and abba what he had done to the little girl,” Inspector Shailesh Pasalwar said. He said while Javed had made a confession in police custody, his parents and neighbours were not convinced of his culpability.
“There were allegations that we had framed Javed and that we were not allowing his parents access. All this speculation has now been put to rest,” Pasalwar said.
That day, after walking a short distance with Nusrat, Javed had asked her to board an auto with him. When she resisted, he told her there were lots of toys for her at the place they were going to visit.
By the time, they reached the 1288 room where Nusrat's body was found 12 days later, she had begun to cry. Javed, however, pacified her repeating the promise of toys and lowered her into the room. Javed has told police that his decision to murder the girl was a panic reaction after she began to resist and raised an alarm.
As previously reported in this paper, Javed has told police he knew every nook and cranny of Nehru Nagar like the back of his hand because of his job with Swastik Cable Network.
His job involved laying cables and collecting monthly subscription fee. Javed has also confessed that he had access to Internet at his office and would often surf porn sites and download clips from the Internet. He would then transfer these clips on to his mobile phone.
