Jammu: The 300-km long Jammu Srinagar National Highway was reopened for vehicular traffic today after two days of closure due to heavy snowfall at Jawahar tunnel-Patnitop section of the highway.

Over 1,000 stranded vehicles have been cleared off the highway and allowed to move to Jammu from Srinagar side.  “The highway was reopened for vehicular traffic today after remaining closed for two days due to heavy snowfall,” an official of the Police Control Room (PCR) said.

The men and machines of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) worked round the clock and cleared the highway of heavy snowfall at Jawahar tunnel, Batote and Patnitop belts of the highway and made it trafficable.

The traffic authorities have, however, allowed only one-way traffic on the highway from Srinagar to Jammu to clear the stranded vehicles and other passenger vehicles.  Stranded vehicles at Qazigund on Kashmir side were allowed to move towards Jammu today and over 1,000 stranded vehicles have crossed Jawahar Tunnel, traffic officer Gulzar Ahmed said.

He, however, said the road is slippery in Shatani Mullah sector and traffic movement is slow here.  The highway was closed on Monday following overnight snowfall in Jawahar tunnel-Patnitop stretch of the highway.
