J&K: Two jawans martyred, terrorist killed in Shopian encounter

A joint team of the police and the security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation on the basis of specific information about the presence of terrorists.

Two Army jawans were killed during an encounter at Chermarg in the Zainapora area of Shopian district in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. A terrorist also died in the encounter that began earlier in the day.

According to Kashmir Zone Police, the deceased armed forces personnel are identified as Santosh Yadav and Chavan Romit Tanaji, both from 1 Rashtriya Rifles (RR).

The police said both the army jawans died due to fatal gunshot wounds around 9:30 am.

"Encounter had started at Chermarg, Zainapora area of Shopian. Police and security forces are on the job," informed Kashmir Zone Police.

Two soldiers of 1 RR battalion who received gunshot injuries were moved to the hospital where they died later. The identity of the killed terrorist has not been ascertained so far.

Earlier today, an encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists at Chermarg, Zainapora area of Shopian in Jammu and Kashmir.

As the security forces zeroed in on the spot where the terrorists were hiding they came under a heavy volume of fire that triggered the gunfight.
