New Delhi: In a bid to push ahead the ambitious ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian Railways has decided to make provision of dustbin in all types of passenger coaches. As of now, dustbins are fitted only in AC coaches.
Modi, during his radio programme, 'Man ki Baat', had narrated a small story related to the cleanliness of railway coaches. The story was inspired by his strong pitch to make India clean by October 2, 2019 – a tribute to the Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi. He had quoted a man who wrote to him saying that when he was recently travelling in a train, he saw people collecting their garbage in a polythene bag instead of throwing it around.
A senior official in the Railway Board Secretariat, however, said that the decision to fit dustbins in coaches has nothing to do with Modi's story as the transporter decided to introduce dustbins in all types of passenger coaches to keep the compartment clean.
The waste management system of Indian Railways is very inefficient in many ways. In some coaches, there are trash bins under the sink which are very small in size. Many coaches do not have dustbins and people throw away wastes through the windows of the coaches.
