A critically injured Chinese mariner was successfully airlifted from a bulk carrier by the Indian Navy on Tuesday, according to a senior naval official. The operation took place off the Mumbai coast and was a coordinated effort involving multiple agencies. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai received an urgent distress call from the bulk carrier 'Zhong Shan Men,' which was approximately 370 kilometers (200 nautical miles) from Mumbai. The distress call reported that a 51-year-old Chinese mariner was suffering from severe injuries and significant blood loss, requiring immediate evacuation.
Navy’s rapid response
In response to the critical situation, the Indian Navy launched a Seaking helicopter from the Indian Naval Air Station (INS) Shikra at 5:50 am on Tuesday. The airlift operation faced numerous challenges, including high winds exceeding 45 knots and the vessel’s heavy rolling. Additionally, the lack of a clear landing area on the continuous deck of the ship added to the difficulty of the operation.
Successful airlift
Despite these challenging conditions, the naval team successfully managed to airlift the injured mariner from the bridge wing of the bulk carrier. The operation required precise coordination and skillful handling of the helicopter in adverse weather and maritime conditions.
Additional assistance
In addition to the naval efforts, the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Samrat, which was in the vicinity, was diverted to provide further assistance. This joint response by the MRCC, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Coast Guard was crucial in ensuring the safe evacuation of the mariner.
Medical transport
Once airlifted, the injured mariner was transported to a nearby air station by the helicopter. He was then transferred to a hospital for further medical treatment. The successful evacuation was a testament to the effectiveness of the coordination between the MRCC, the Indian Navy, and other involved agencies.
