Ahmedabad: India has got its first underwater restaurant in Ahmedabad. The restaurant, The Real Poseidon, has a dining area which has been created 20 feet below the ground level.
Deriving its title from the Greek God of Sea-Posiedon, the 32-seater restaurant is covered with a huge aquarium which has 1,60,000 litres of water. The aquarium is also filled with around 4,000 different species of fishes in it.
Run by city-based businessman, Bharat Bhatt, the restaurant serves only vegetarian meals. Visitors need take the stairs down to a tunnel-based dining hall where they can dine while enjoying the view.
"We wanted to do something different and unique for Ahmedabad people. 3-4 years ago, my son gave me this idea. We started working on his idea... initially, our designs were rejected and it took almost 2 years to finalise the design. And now today, we are ready to serve the people," he said.
The owner said that he is also planning a live orchestra/band in the near future to entertain the diners.
"This is really a nice concept. It gives us an illusion that we are sitting and eating somewhere below an ocean," one of the visitor said.
Located in the South Bopal area of the city, the restaurant, on its opening day on February 1, had garnered 150 bookings through radio, online and print promotions.
Last week, a special committee on the smart city project in the Central government had chosen Ahmedabad as its sixth choice among 20 cities in the country.
