Patna, July 5: The public sector Punjab National Bank has preserved the bank account of India's first President Dr Rajendra Prasad for the last 50 years.
The bank account has been kept active and interest is added every six months, with the balance showing a princely sum of Rs 1,813, reports The Pioneer.
Dr Rajendra Prasad's presidential term ended in May, 1962, after which he opened a savings account in PNB's Exhibition Road branch here on October 24, 1962. He passed away a few months after opening the account on February 28, 1963 in Patna.
PNB officials say, nobody has come forward to stake claim for the money in the last 50 years.
Dr Rajendra Prasad's bank account is updated every six months with fresh interest added. His account number is displayed prominently in the PNB branch along with his portrait that was put up on Wednesday.
The PNB account number is 0380000100030687.
This bank account is perhaps the only bank account in India which is not only open and functional even after the customer's death, but also getting interest added to the principal.
"He was not an ordinary customer for us...he was the most respected customer of the branch", the branch manager told the Pioneer reporter.
