Mumbai, Nov 20: Janata Party president Subramaniam Swamy has said the concept of independent public prosecutor outlined in the Jan Lokpal Bill mooted by Team Anna is “worth supporting” even though present laws can also deal with corruption.
“We support Anna Hazare. One of the clauses in the Jan Lokpal Bill....the concept of independent public prosecutor is worth supporting as it is being in use in Hong Kong,” Swamy said during a talk organised by a local organisation on Saturday evening.
In the backdrop of the demand raised by Team Anna that CBI be brought under the purview of Lokpal, Swamy said, “an independent public prosecuting agency can directly order the investigation and there is no need for government's permission”.
He, however, said that corruption can be fought by present laws as well.
“My differences with Anna Hazare were about bringing the Jan Lokpal Bill. But I want to say that with the present laws as well, action can be taken and culprits can be punished,” he added.
Swamy, who has spearheaded his single-handed fight against corruption in the 2G scam involving political and corporate bigwigs, believes the present laws are adequate to tackle corruption provided the government has the political will.
