New Delhi: 5000 national flags and 16,000 balloons will be put up at all major crossroads in the city on India's 68th Independence Day.
Entry points into the city will be specially decorated.200 banners will be strung up at 20 major crossroads.
In a special drive, the capital's Public Works Department (PWD) will remove posters and hoardings from walls and will prune trees.It will add a fresh coat of paint to flyovers and kerb stones.
The government has also set the target of planting 11 lakh trees in Delhi. The PWD and civic authorities will take part in the drive.The PWD will also remove debris and graffiti and spruce up the 1,250 km of road in the capital that it maintains.
At the behest of the ruling BJP, the Centre has agreed to make a special enclosure for the public to witness the flag hoisting ceremony at the Red Fort. The enclosure will have seat 10,000 people.
The Delhi Transport Corporation or DTC will run a shuttle service from the Inter State Bus Terminus to ferry people to the Red Fort, which remains out of bounds for vehicles during the ceremony.
The Delhi unit of the BJP has requested the Delhi Metro to start its services at 4.30 am on August 15, an hour and a half before its scheduled time of 6 am.
