Hyderabad: A 23-year-old student from Hyderabad has been shot dead allegedly by unidentified men in the United States, the victim's relatives said.

Sai Kiran, an engineering graduate, was pursuing a master's degree in information technology at Atlantis University in Miami, Florida. He had left India only a month and a half back.

Four rounds were fired at Kiran around 12.15 pm on Saturday after he refused to give his iPhone which was demanded by the assailants, his uncle Shravan Kumar said.

Sai Kiran's family stays at Parimala Nagar in Kushaiguda suburban area on the outskirts of Hyderabad. At around 3.30 am, some family friends delivered the terrible news to Kiran's father Srihari Goud.

"We received information from his friends that some people demanded his phone on which he was already talking. His friend on the other end of the call heard four rounds of gun shots being fired. We are awaiting more details," Kumar said.

Kiran's flatmates called emergency number 911 after the incident and police and an ambulance reached the spot. Kiran was taken to anearby hospital where he was declared dead, Shravan said.

His family is in contact with Telangana secretariat officials and the Telugu Associations representatives in the US. Sai's family has appealed to the Telangana and the central governments to help bring the body home.

"US embassy has confirmed the incident and visa arrangements are being made for the family members," Malkajgiri DCP R Rama Rajeswari said.

The incident happened near Sai Kiran's residence in Florida, he said, adding that he had gone to the States one-and-a-half-month ago.
