GHMC Results: TRS comes out as single largest party, BJP wins big, ups tally from 4 to 50, AIMIM bags 44
GHMC Results: The election was held in 150 wards, and results for 146 wards were announced by late Friday evening. The ruling TRS's tally fell below the majority mark as it won 56 seats and the AIMIM 44.
Lauding its "astounding" performance in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls, where it has made big gains, as a "moral victory", the BJP on Friday said it has emerged as the "only alternative" to the ruling TRS in Telangana. BJP leaders hailed the party's show as it won 48 seats, against only four it had earlier in the corporation, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah thanking people for reposing faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "politics of development."
The election was held in 150 wards, and results for 149 wards were announced by late Friday evening. The ruling TRS's tally fell below the majority mark as it won 55 seats and the AIMIM 44. The BJP believes that it has now emerged as the main challenger to the TRS, replacing the Congress, which won only two wards.
Shah, who had campaigned for the polls, tweeted, "Gratitude to the people of Telangana for reposing faith in PM @NarendraModi led BJP's Politics of Development. Congratulations to Shri @JPNadda ji and Shri @bandisanjay_bjp for BJP's astounding performance in GHMC. I applaud the hard work of our karyakartas of @BJP4Telangana."
Counting of votes cast in all 150 divisions began at 8 am at 30 places in the city with Telangana State Election Commission deploying over 8,000 personnel. The authorities have arranged 150 counting halls with 14 tables in each hall. State Election Commissioner C Parthasarthy said a counting supervisor and two assistants were deployed at each table. Meanwhile, prohibitory orders and traffic restrictions were imposed around counting centres.
Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda police imposed a ban on victory rallies for next 48 hours. Out of a total 74.67 lakh voters, 46.55 per cent has cast their votes in 149 divisions on Tuesday. There were 1,925 postal ballots. Polling in one division was stopped due to discrepancy in ballot paper and re-poll was held on Thursday. A total of 1,122 candidates are in the fray. The bitterly contested elections saw a high-decibel campaign with the participation of several central ministers and top national leaders of BJP.
While the TRS contested all seats, the BJP fielded candidates in 149 divisions, the Congress in 146, the TDP in 106, the AIMIM in 51, the CPI in 17 and the CPI-M in 12 divisions. Other recognised parties fielded 76 candidates while 415 independents also tested their political fortunes. The mayor’s post is reserved for a woman this time.

Bolstered by its victory in the recent bypoll to Dubbak Assembly constituency, the BJP conducted a spirited campaign to win the GHMC polls to boost its chances in the 2023 Assembly polls. It has drafted its General Secretary Bhupendra Yadav, who has been its in-charge for Bihar, to supervise the poll preparations in Hyderabad. Top leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, party president J P Nadda, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Ministers Prakash Javadekar, Smriti Irani and MoS (Home) G Kishan Reddy, who is Lok Sabha member from Secunderabad, party MP and BJYM national president Tejasvi Surya participated in the campaign.
The BJP highlighted the TRS's "alliance" with the AIMIM and sought votes to provide clean and transparent administration in the city.
