New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry has finally decided to drop its own controversial proposal allowing midwives homeopaths and Ayush doctors performing abortions. The decision was taken in the wake of persistent pressures from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies if India (FOGSI).
The ministry has decided that the entire above mentioned healthcare specialist will not be allowed to perform ‘non-invasive' procedures. The health ministry is now considering that these healthcare professional be allowed to perform the ‘non-invasive' part which includes prescribing medicines etc.
The department will now take the draft of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) bill to the cabinet with these minor changes to get the approval. A second proposal is also doing the rounds which include increasing the period of abortion till 24 weeks.
