Suspected LeT operative David Headley had stayed in an apartment in South Mumbai during 2007-08, but the housing society's records find no mention of his stay, police said on Tuesday.

The American terror suspect stayed as a paying guest for a couple of months in the fifth floor apartment of Hashu Kripalani in Shyam Nivas Co-operative Housing Society, close to US Consulate office in Breach Candy area, they said.

The apartment number 56 belongs to Kripalanis, they said, adding that the family did not bother to inform about Headley to the housing society's managing committee.

"Police approached us seeking details of apartment number 56...they were talking about Headley, who stayed in the house. It is mandatory for the owners of the apartments to obtain NOC from the committee to accommodate paying guests. But this was not followed in this case," a committee member said.

"We do not have his (Headley's) photo and are unable to give further details," the member said.

Headley, who had set up a visa facilitating agency in a building in Tardeo area, had got the office on rent. Even in that building there are no documents or photographs pertaining to Headley. Also in 'Moksha' gym, frequented by the Pakistan-born American citizen, there is no record to track him down, police said.

Claiming to have spoken to Headley on several occasions during his stay at Shyam Nivas, laundry man Pradeep Kanojiya said, "David had told me he would get me a good job in America and asked to arrange for Rs 1.20 lakh...but this did not materialise."

He said, "The tall and fair-looking Headley had phoned him twice after that but I had gone to my native place. Since I had lost my mobile, I could not remember his mobile number and hence there was no contact between us."

When he returned recently he came to know about Headley's suspected connections with terror organisation, Kanojiya said.

Headley and his Canadian associate Tahawwur Hussain Rana were arrested last month by American FBI for plotting terror attacks in India. PTI
