Chennai: Madras High Court has stayed a single judge order permitting a woman Assistant Professor to work in the Indian Maritime University (IMU).

The First Bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Kumar Agrawal and Justice M Satyanarayanan, which passed orders on appeals filed by the Vice Chancellor and Registrar of IMU, challenging an order passed on July 23.

Justice D Hariparanthaman had permitted J Vanishree to work as Assistant Professor granted interim injunction till September 10.

Originally, Vanishree, who was working as an Assistant Professor in Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), resigned from her job after she was selected by IMU and joined duty on February 1, as per the orders received from IMU.

But, she was not permitted by the authorities to join.

Later, the IMU cancelled the appointment order, which was challenged by Vanishree by way of a petition. Justice Hariparanthaman, who heard her petition directed the IMU to permit her to join duty.

Aggrieved by the order, the IMU filed an appeal saying that the order of the single judge amounted to allowing of a Writ petition filed by Vanishree without hearing the IMU, hence the order of single judge has to be stayed.
