Chennai: The Madras High Court yesterday ordered issue of a notice to authorities concerned on a petition seeking a direction to appoint Vice Chancellors of three Universities in Tamil Nadu.
A division bench, comprising Justice Chitra Venkatraman and Justice T.S.Sivagnanam, issued the notice to the Secretary, Higher Education, and University Grants Commission returnable by December 5 on a PIL filed by S.Krishnaswamy, convener, Tamil Nadu Federation of Universities Faculty Association, Madurai.
The petitioner prayed for a direction to authorities to appoint suitable persons as Vice-Chancellors of Periyar University of Salem, Bharathiyar University, Trichy, and Alagappa University at Karaikkudi strictly as per UGC norms.
The petitioner contended a search committee was constituted in September this year for selection of suitable persons for the posts of VCs, which has to act in consonance and search right persons with the requisite qualification in education and experience as per UGC rules and regulations.
The petitioner sought a direction to authorities for selecting persons who possess requisite qualification and experience for the posts of Vice-Chancellors and interim injunction to restrain authorities from selecting unqualified persons.
