Fatehabad: A power consumer here got the shock of his life when he got an electricity bill for an astronomical amount of over Rs 1,776 crore for October-November period.
The incident comes close on the heels of a 'paan seller' in Gohana town near Sonepat receiving a Rs 132-crore power bill.
Ashok Kumar, a resident of Ram Nagar Tohana, got the power bill of Rs 17,76,00,06,775 for the two-month period. The bewildered consumer told reporters Tuesday that he almost fainted on seeing such a huge amount in the bill
He also alleged that he was "harassed" by power department officials when he approached them to correct the bill.
When contacted, P D Sharma, Sub-divisional Officer of the Power Department, said, "It is a computer mistake. Such bills are corrected and then the consumer is asked to make the payment (of the revised amount)."
Haryana power utility UHBVN (Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitaran Nigam) two months ago had termed the Rs 132.29-crore bill to the 'paan seller' as a "blunder" caused due to some technical problem in its online billing software system.
Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) had later found out that the actual electricity bill of the paan seller Rajesh was Rs 1,668 for two months till October 14.
