Guwahati, Jul 16: The Assam government this evening transferred City Senior Superintendent of Police Apurba Jiban Baruah following the outrage over the molestation of a teenaged girl outside a pub here.
Official sources said Dibrugarh SP Arabinda Kalita has been asked to take charge as Guwahati SSP with immediate effect.
The transfer followed the demand by the National Commission for Women for the removal of Baruah and public outrage over the incident.
Baruah has been transferred to Dibrugarh. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi met the girl at her home and assured the government will provide all protection and help to her for her rehabilitation.
Earlier in the day, he announced the case will be handed over to CID.
Altogether eight persons were arrested in connection with the incident.
Police have announced Rs one lakh cash award for information on the whereabouts of main accused Amarjyoti Kalita.
Gogoi also slammed the news channel that aired the footage of the molestation saying its role was "unethical".
It was the moral duty of the cameraman who filmed the incident to inform the police, he said.
The issue also rocked the state assembly resulting in separate walkouts by Opposition All India United Democratic Front, Asom Gana Parishad and BJP.
