The Gurgaon police in a two-hour long operation on Friday night shot dead two criminals in the upmarket C-Block of Palam Vihar, while three other criminals escaped in the dark, police said. Twenty two rounds were fired during the shootout.
Five armed criminals entered house number 1846 of Anup Chaturvedi, working as a general manager in Maruti Suzuki. As the criminals tried to take the occupants of the home as hostages, the latter managed to inform security, who closed off all exits.
Prompt response of the Chaturvedi household helped the police reach the spot and gun down the two criminals. The family locked themselves up in a room which had a rear exit when they realised the criminals had entered the house. The robbers were armed with country made pistols and knives, Anil Dhavan, DCP, Gurgaon, said.
Once out, the family made a call on the police control room around 11 pm. Three out of the five criminals managed to escape in Chaturvedi's SX4 car when they heard the police siren, police said. The three later abandoned the car and fled.
When the police entered the two storeyed house, they found the ground floor vacant. When they checked on the first floor, they found the door of a bedroom locked from inside. As the police asked the occupants to step out, they opened fire. That is when the Gurgaon police and the commandos fired in retaliation killing both the criminals.
Police is on the lookout of the three robbers who escaped. Police has recovered two country made pistols, a knife and a cellphone from the spot.
