Srinagar: An army Jawan was reportedly killed in the ongoing gunbattle between security forces and militants in Rafiabad area of Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district.
According to reports, two militants are beleived to be holed up in a house at Ladura village in Rafiabad.
The exchange of fire between militants and personnel of Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operations Group of state police is underway.
Reports suggested the gun battle erupted soon after police received information about the presence of two local militants, including Imitayaz Kandoo of Sopore, a close aide of Qayoom Najar, the disbanded Hizbul Mujahideen militant.
The encounter started when militants opened fire on the Army and police.
Reports also said that Pakistani militants too might be present in the area.
Police said that Kandoo was involved in some killings in Sopore and carries a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head.
This is the second encounter in Rafiabad area of North Kashmir since last one week. Last time, four militants were killed and one Pakistani terrorist, identified as Sajjad Ahmed, was captured alive.
In recent weeks, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a spike in militant violence that coincided with a downturn in ties between India and Pakistan.
