Government on Friday said it is working on the proposal to raise salaries of MPs for which a Parliamentary panel has submitted a report to Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman.

"I am working on it. The views of Finance and the Law Ministries would be sought before it is sent to the Union Cabinet," Parliamentary Affairs Minister P K Bansal told reporters.

The Joint Committee on MPs' Salary and Allowances has recommended a salary increase of five times and slightly above that of a Secretary to the Government of India for Parliamentarians.

As against Rs 16,000 per month an MP gets as salary currently, the hike proposed by the panel on salaries and allowances is pegged at Rs 80,000, a bit more than a Secretary-rank official.

Justifying the proposed hike, Bansal said that the salary of government employees has increased with the implementation the Sixth Pay Commission and there have been a hike in the pay packages of private sector employees too.

He, however, said that there was no pressure from the MPs for salary hike.

Along with allowances like Rs 1,000 per sitting of Parliament or meeting of Parliamentary committees during inter-session period, an MP normally gets Rs 60,000 including the salary.

The last hike in salaries and allowances of MPs was effected some ten years back. PTI
