Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna yesterday said the state government would pay adequate compensation to farmers for damaged crops and washed-away farmland in the wake of the June deluge.

“The state government will extend all possible helps to affected farmers and officials have been asked to expedite the rehabilitation work,” the Chief Minister said after visiting the Pithoragarh district to take stock of the situation.

Bahuguna said his government was committed to development of remote and backward regions in the state, according to a press release here.

Responding to the demand of residents of Pithoragarh to declare it a backward district, the Chief Minister said the District Collector had been asked to carry out a survey and submit a report to the backward classes commission.

“The state government would take a decision on recommendations of the commission,” he said.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by Congress leader and in-charge of party affairs in Uttarakhand Ambika Soni.
