Guwahati, July 26: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi yesterday cancelled his scheduled visit to South Africa in view of the sudden spurt in extremist activities in the state.
He has informed the matter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi through a letter.
In his letter made available to the media, Gogoi said, “I would like to inform you that I have cancelled my official tour to South Africa which was scheduled from July 25 to August 2 in view of the sudden extremist incidents in Assam.”
Three grenades exploded in Assam on July 23 and July 24. There is intelligence report that militants will attempt to carry out more subversive activities in the state before Independence Day.
“I have asked Director General of Police and Chief Secretary to take immediate steps to prevent such incidents in the state and intensify police patrolling and instruct the district administrations to be more vigilant,” he said.
