Ranaghat/Kolkata: School and its students, and not her own traumatized condition, were the bigger concerns of the 71-year-old nun who survived a gang-rape two days before in a convent school of Nadia in West Bengal.

There was no anger in her voice. Rather she was a picture of calmness and sobriety and was praying that the men who harmed her be forgiven.

Battling with her pains at the Ranaghat hospital, the somber nun kept saying, “Dil mein dard hai (My heart is broken).

As published in a report by Times of India, throughout Sunday, she was more concerned about the security of the school and its students than the trauma she was in, said the hospital superintendent Atindranath Mondal.

Visitors welled-up with tears at the distressed condition yet the spirit of forgiveness of the senior-aged.

A local whose son studies in the school said, “That's the greatness of a spiritual soul like her. But all of us want the miscreants behind such a heinous crime to be arrested and given exemplary punishment.”

Though the police have detained eight people, who are all history-sheeters, the real culprits still could not be caught.

Sources said that none of them resembled the four persons whose images had been recorded in the school's CCTV camera. Nadia SP Arnab Ghosh said that the detained persons were being interrogated.

Keshari Nath Tripathi, governor of the state has also said that the administration would punish the culprits but felt citizens needed to step forward to help police nab them.

The news of the gang-rape of the elderly nun, loot and ransack of the convent had attracted media attention from all around the world.

She was brought to the hospital around 7 am on Saturday after the brutal assault took place. "Immediately, a team of doctors attended to her and a senior gynecologist operated on her," the hospital superintendent said.

Psychiatrist, out of the team of the doctors, treating the nun said that she is now stable physically and mentally.

Two others were with the 71-year-old nun when the miscreants broke into the convent. They had attacked the three, pushed them from one room to another before tying up two and the securityman to a chair in a room and locked the door from outside. Then they gang-raped the nun in another room.

Apart from cash from the school coffer, the miscreants looted sisters' laptops, mobile phones and other belongings, ransacked their rooms and rummaged through their cupboards and bags.

The more disturbing fact for the community was that the miscreants desecrated the chapel at the convent too.

A convent official said, “That leads me to believe that it is not a mere dacoity. It is an attack on the religion. They assaulted a consecrated woman who devoted her life to service and desecrated the church. It has hurt the Christian community deeply.”

Several nuns from across the country visited the convent on Sunday to express solidarity with the Sisters and help them overcome the trauma.

While the outraged parents and the students of the convent   gathered around the school and appealed for justice.
