New Delhi: Heavy rains and floods continue to wreak havoc in Gujarat, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Manipur.
In Gujarat, 53 people have died as heavy rain lashed northern parts of the state. 32 people have died in worst affected Banaskantha district alone.
A total of 14 teams comprising 592 jawans of different agencies and 5-Air Force helicopters have been pressed into service for relief and rescue work.
About 40 lakh people in 14 districts of the state have been affected in floods following heavy rainfall in the last few days. More than 10 lakh food packets have been distributed among the flood victims.
In West Bengal, the death toll in rain related incidents has gone up to 48.
Reports said that flood situation continues to be grim as fresh areas have been inundated due to rain and discharge of water from reservoirs.
Army was called out at Purbasthali in Burdwan district to help the local administration to speed up relief and rescue operations.
Around 37 lakhs people have been affected in 12 districts of the state.
In Rajasthan, 28 deaths have been reported of which 12 people lost their lives in the last few days, following very heavy rainfall and flood-like situation in many parts of the state.
Rajasthan has experienced excessive rainfall in most of its districts. The situation was grim, particularly in the districts of Jalore, Jhalawar, Baran, Sirohi, Barmer and Dungarpur, the release said.
In Manipur, about 20 villagers of Joumol village in Chandel district were swept away in Saturday's landslide. Two teams of the NDRF have been earmarked for rescue and relief operations in the village.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday evening spoke to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over phone and enquired about the flood situation in the state.
He also spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel and Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and assured Centre's full cooperation to the state governments.
The Home Ministry said it was regularly monitoring the flood situation in various parts of the country and extending necessary assistance.
