Nagapattinam, Mar 21: A large number of fishermen belonging to nine hamlets in the district today launched an indefinite strike protesting the alleged attack on six fishermen off Kodiakarai coast by the Sri Lankan Navy.



The agitation would continue till a concrete solution to the problem was found by the Central and state governments, the fishermen association leaders said.

Besides the fishermen, fishing labourers who are engaged in marketing and fish processing activities were also taking part in the strike.

Fishermen of Vedaranyam area staged a demonstration in front of the head post office condemning the attack.

All the shops in Vedaranyam area were closed today showing solidarity with the fishermen.

The six fishermen who ventured into the sea for fishing on March 19 from Arucottuthurai in Vedaranyam in a mechanised boat were allegedly attacked by Sri Lankan Navy personnel.
