New Delhi: For the first time Indian women force of the Indian army, Air Force and Navy marched at the Republic Day parade today.
The first lady officers' squad on the 66th Republic Day celebration was greeted as a symbol of women empowerment.
Yesterday, Wing Commander Pooja Thakur became the first woman to lead the Guard of Honour for President Barack Obama at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
This move comes only two days after the Prime Minister launched the government's ambitious ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign.
Despite the rains, the Republic day parade was a huge success. The celebrations started with the unfurling of the national flag by the President.
Thereafter, the national anthem was played and President Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Barack Obama and Vice President Hamid Ansari and other dignitaries paid respect to the tri-coloured flag.
