Nashik, May 6: The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) conducted raids at the market yard here and seized 400 kg mangoes and three kg carbide powder used for artificial ripening of fruits, sources said.

The raid was conducted yesterday in the marker located close to the RTO here, FDA Joint Commissioner Shashikant Kenkare told reporters.

"This is the first action against the fruit-vendors and we conducted the raids after we received information that mangoes, water melons and other fruits are being ripened artificially by using carbide powder, which is dangerous to humans," he said.

Five FDA squads along with the staff of the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) have conducted raids in the market yard. Samples of these mangoes have been sent to Pune for laboratory tests, FDA sources said.

A trader identified as Amarjit Sonkar was detained and his mango-stock was impounded, they said.
