A delegation of European Union Parliamentarians will visit Kashmir on Tuesday. This will be the first visit by a foreign delegation to Kashmir ever since the abrogation of Article 370. The delegation comprises of 28 members.
The visit of the EU panel is being seen as a major diplomatic outreach by the government in a bid to counter Pakistan's narrative on the situation in the valley, giving them a "clear view" of India's development and governance priorities.
On Monday, Members of the European Parliament met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval. Via PM Modi, the delegation was conveyed that an urgent action was needed against those supporting and sponsoring terrorism.
According to an official release, PM Modi said the visit will provide the delegation with a better understanding of the cultural and religious diversity of the regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. He hoped that it will also give them a "clear view" of the development and governance priorities in the region.
The Members of the European Parliament also briefed MEPs from nine countries on cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan, constitutional changes made in the status of Jammu and Kashmir with the revocation of Article 370 and the situation in the valley.
