Ahmedabad : 70-year-old Dilip Dhar and his wife Gauri from Satellite managed to free themselves from the clutches of three armed robbers and scared them away on Monday night, reports Mirror.
The incident took place in Ashoknagar Society, near Sundervan, in Satellite. Dilip Dhar, a former ISRO scientist, and his wife Gauri stay in the house. Their sons are settled in the US.
On Monday, around 9.30 pm, when the couple was watching TV, their doorbell rang. While the wife went to the kitchen, Dhar opened the door slightly and saw three men standing. One of them was wearing a checkered shirt.
Dhar thought the men must have come to collect donation for Navratri. But when he asked them what they wanted, they forced open the door and entered the drawing room.
Dhar fell down and two of the three robbers overpowered him. One of them put his hand into the old man's mouth so as to prevent him from screaming. The other was sitting on him, with a knife in hand, to make sure he doesn't move.
The terrified old man mustered some courage and began kicking the robbers. One of the robbers, who had stuffed his hand into Dhar's mouth, lost his balance and fell. The knife in the hand of the other robber also fell during the tussle.
Dhar's wife, on hearing the commotion, came running from the kitchen and tried to rescue her husband. But the third robber pushed her and she fell on the floor, unconscious.
The old man's mouth was bloodstained because of the fingernail marks of the robber. But that did not stop him from shouting for help. The wife too gained consciousness and began calling out names of their neighbours, seeking help.
Sensing they could be caught and beaten up by people, the robbers ran away. The Dhars immediately locked the door and called up the society chairman. They even informed the Satellite police about the incident.
The cops recovered a knife and registered an attempt-to-loot complaint against three unidentified people.
“Elderly couples staying alone are easy targets for robbers. We wish the cops visit their houses, once every day. That will at least give them some feeling of security. We have been very fortunate this time, but this could happen again,” said Dhar.
