Chennai: A day after Sachin Tendulkar retired from international cricket, DMK chief M Karunanidhi lauded his “unmatched records” and said it was “quite natural” for the Centre to confer the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award, on him.
Observing that he was moved by the batting icon's “touching and tearful farewell speech,” the DMK chief said, “You (Sachin) have walked into history and history is bejewelled by your presence.
It is quite natural that the Government of India has announced the Bharat Ratna for you in recognition of your unmatched records.”
Recalling Tendulkar's brilliant and memorable track record which “the Indian nation can be proud of forever,” the 90-year-old DMK patriarch said, “You have set grand standards.
You will be inspiring generations to come. You have crowned Indian cricket by your unbeatable and unforgettable achievements.”
“I wish you a long life, excellent health and infinite happiness,” he added.
