Chennai, Aug 6: Coming out in support of state police chief K Ramanujam who was prevented by the SPG from receiving Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his Tamil Nadu visit last week, DMK president M Karunandidhi today said it amounted to “insulting” the state and its police force and demanded action against those responsible for th incident.
“The Prime Minister's security is important, (but) at the same time such incidents are not good,” he said.
Responding to a set of queries in DMK mouthpice ‘Murasoli,' Karunanidhi said the incident should be seen as “an insult” to Tamil Nadu and its police department.
“It is regrettable that the Prime Minister's SPG officials are not even aware who the state DGP is. The right thing to do is hold a probe and take action against those responsible. It will also ensure better relations,” he said.
Ramanujam was prevented by an SPG official from receiving Singh at Tiruchirappalli airport en route to his Thirumayam visit for an official function on August 2.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had slammed SPG for the “outrageous” incident and demanded action.
Karunanidhi, whose party is a former UPA ally, flayed the Centre's decision to relax FDI cap in various sectors and reiterated his party's stand against it.
The government had last week opened the gates to overseas investors relaxing investment norms in multi-brand retail and raising FDI cap in several sectors while making it 100 per cent in telecom.
On Cabinet Committee for Economic Affairs approving a 10 per cent stake sale in IOCL, he said DMK will always oppose any disinvestment in public sector undertakings.
On Telangana issue, he wondered if such “big” decisions” should be taken with general elections around the corner and said the issue should have been sorted out through talks with the parties concerned at the right time.
