New Delhi: Retaliating in a smouldering diplomatic dispute touched off by the arrest and strip search of an Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade in New York, the External Affairs Ministry has asked the Delhi traffic police not to be lenient with American mission officials violating any traffic rules.
In response to these orders the Delhi traffic police have booked 10 US embassy cars since Thursday.
Four US embassy vehicles were booked for sporting tinted glasses, one for flouting orders and five for improper parking.
Delhi Police is paying special attention to US embassy vehicles and registration numbers of US embassy cars (77 CD) have been brought to the notice of traffic police personnel.
Earlier US embassy officials got away claiming immunity even if they were caught for drunken driving. Now, if embassy staffers are caught driving drunk, they will be given a breathalyzer test and fined.
Khobragade's case has caused a serious rift between the United States and India.India has also asked the United States on Friday to withdraw a diplomat from the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi.
