New Delhi, Apr 4: A Delhi court today sent a gangster, who was deported from Vietnam to Mumbai in November 2010, to two days of police custody in connection with a extortion case here.
Prakash Pandey, alias Bunty Pandey, was allegedly associated with Mumbai's underworld don Chhota Rajan and later parted with him. He was deported from Vietnam to Mumbai on November 4, 2010.
He was brought to the national capital in connection with a extortion case and was produced before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav who remanded him to police custody till April 6.
Pandey, son of a former army subedar, had allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh from a Delhi-based businessman, the Delhi police's Special Cell told the court.
The prosecution said Pandey had made threat calls to the businessman from Vietnam. The FIR was registered in the case in 2009.
Pandey, along with Chhota Rajan, was allegedly involved in several murders including the killing of Managing Director of East-West Airlines Thakiyuddin Wahid.
He was deported to Mumbai on November 4 last year after the police learned that the gangster stayed in Vietnam under a pseudonym Vijay Subhash Sharma.
Delhi police's Special Cell sleuths said Pandey had posed as a labour contractor in Vietnam and continued to make threat calls to his targets in Mumbai demanding huge extortion amounts.
Pandey, a native of Uttarakhand, has 34 cases against him including murder, attempt to murder and extortion.
He was booked under stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in two cases in 2008.
He was holding a passport issued by the Indian Embassy in Cambodia and had allegedly smuggled 16 people from Uttar Pradesh into Vietnam on the pretext of providing them employment. PTI
