A 32-year-old woman was burnt alive while her husband suffered serious burn injuries as their car caught fire on Saturday evening in south Delhi.

The duo was in the car when it caught fire on the Nelson Mandela Marg and in front of the DLF Mall at around 5:55 pm, a senior police official said. Prima facie, it appears that the car caught fire due to leakage of petrol.

The deceased has been identified as Shubha. Her husband S K Kanji, who works in a trading company in Gurgaon, was severely injured and has been admitted to Safdarjung hospital.

The couple, who hails from West Bengal, resides in south Delhi's Aya Nagar, the official said. Kanji was driving the car.

'The car was completely burnt. When the fire was doused, the woman was already charred to death. Her skull was visible. She probably could not come out of the car because of the seat belt," the official said.

Kanji was coming back from Gurgaon with his wife when smoke started coming out of the car. "They were both wearing seat belts. Before he was able to move his car to the road side, the car caught fire and both were not able to get out of the car," the official said.

Other motorists managed to get Kanji out of the car but Subha was trapped inside as the seat belt could not be opened. Kanji suffered 70 per cent burn injuries.

"She was charred to death on the seat of the car itself. The doors of the car were also jammed and fire brigade officials had to use cutters to open them up," the official said.

The official said they were yet to ascertain why the couple could not get out of the car when it caught fire.

"It was a petrol car. We did not find any gas cylinders inside. It looks like that the car caught fire due to petrol leakage," the official said. PTI
